Greece is first in the percentage of students but last in graduations
In order to cope with the labor markets, future workers need, in addition to the skills directly related to the profession they practice at each time, horizontal skills such as digital literacy, communication, teamwork and problem-solving skills. , but also personal characteristics, such as adaptability, resilience, initiative, etc.
That’s what a special BSE study published Tuesday says: “The critical role of countries in School Vocational Orientation”.
As it is emphasized, “in the face of ever-increasing choices and challenges, many young people lose their orientation or are led to inappropriate choices, with negative effects on their personal development. The initial professional choice is a critical decision, which requires information, self-awareness, maturity and critical ability, while it is also significantly influenced by other factors such as personal characteristics, social background, family, social, cultural values, geographical, economic and political conditions. but also from random and unpredictable events.
Therefore, it is important that school education, beyond basic knowledge and skills, offers students opportunities for self-development and self-management, through an integrated process of professional orientation and career counseling. And this is because the first critical decisions regarding employment are made during adolescence.
In essence, professional orientation is now seen as part of the lifelong process of learning and adapting to the ever-changing labor market, with School Vocational Orientation being the first and critical time of this chain. Its upgrading, among other things, through the development of cooperation between schools and the business community (e.g. visits to businesses, guidance-mentoring, internships/job shadowing, competitions and entrepreneurship workshops, etc.) is important for development and social issue. “
Based on the study
- – Greece is first in Europe in the percentage of students (46% against about 33% in the EU-28 but 28th in the graduation rate (8.9% against 25%) according to the National Authority for Higher Education *ETHAEE 2020.
- – According to the OECD’s PISA 2018 survey, the preferences of 15-year-old students for their future careers are concentrated in just 10 occupations.
- – In Greece, the institution of School Vocational Guidance remains marginalized, despite the occasional efforts to upgrade and strengthen its quality. According to an OECD study, Greece has the highest percentage of students without access to School Vocational Guidance activities (52%).
- – No career is out of reach. But the tasks, knowledge and skills required for almost every occupation are changing rapidly, and modern labor market trends require flexibility and adaptability. It is important that the education system provides students with all the necessary resources for their successful professional development in this environment. Resources that will allow them to be broadly informed about professions and employment, increase their self-awareness, and prepare them to make choices that will satisfy them over time.
For BSE, the effective School Vocational Orientation it is a social good, since the appropriate professional path has a positive impact on the wider society, in terms of employment, productivity and economic growth. As stated, “the social community is a valuable source of information and inspiration for students and especially for the less privileged. The available research data demonstrate that the organized participation of business activity in career guidance activities has a significant and measured effect on the career development of individuals, especially when it is created in the early adolescent community.”
The SEV emphasizes, “that in Greece, the cooperation of schools – in the field of guidance has not been systematically developed although school professional guidance is the essential beginning of Lifelong Learning.
In fact, the BSE has submitted proposals to strengthen the contribution of the business community to the professional orientation of students. They include among others:
The creation of conditions for the cultivation of a culture of cooperation between the educational and business community.
The undertaking of joint initiatives to strengthen the school-business partnership in the entire spectrum of education.

The utilization and promotion of good practices of mobilizing the business community in the field of School Vocational Guidance.
