There are up to 30 places in total. All the councilors confirmed the implementation of new homes for Prague citizens with disabilities who need a high level of care and are at risk of being placed in institutional care outside their hometown. This is especially true for people with support-demanding behaviors such as autism.
Respite services are among the services that offer the family home to caregivers to combine with work, care for other household members, or free time. Their role in the system of public services and finances is therefore crucial, as they reduce the burnout and overload of caregivers. Unfortunately, historically, the capacity of respite services for families with children with medical disabilities is minimal.
Finally, unlike in the past, the development of these services is one of the priorities of the capital’s current social policy. “Prague only started to deal with the lack of relief services for families with children in recent years. We mainly use our own contributory organizations for this. The first of the network of new centers opened at the end of last year in Vršovice after two years of preparation, the other four centers with a total of 26 beds are in various stages of implementation and will gradually open over the course of three years. As of the new year, a new relief service should be launched in Veleslavín, another in Strašnice, and a completely new building with four households is being built in Hrdlořez,” said the councillor. m of Prague for social policy and healthcare Milena Johnová.
Council of the head m of Prague further took note of the procedure and assigned tasks in the implementation of specialized social services for Prague citizens with demanding care behavior who require highly individualized help and support. This is especially true of people with autism. In this case, the municipality continues the targeted development of social care in the last three years, when they opened the first two households for a total of eight roommates. Four other facilities for high-intensity services are being completed, with services for 14 people created by the end of 2022, respectively from 2023. Another household due to start in 2024 is in the reconstruction stage, and the capacities created in 2025 are in the stage of investment plan and search for a suitable service provider.
“I am glad that over the past three years we have managed to build the foundations of care on the green field, which the capital had completely resigned to in the past, and created the first community homes for young people with autism who require a high level of continuous support. A number of other centers and community care homes are in various stages of preparation, the first of which will be opened already this winter, and the others gradually during the years 2023 to 2025. In the development of both types of services, we are paying back 30 years of the capital city’s lack of interest in modern and effective social policy we offer a dignified life in a normal environment even to people with very specific demands for care, who in the past were transported to institutions on the border or ended up in a psychiatric hospital, because most ordinary residential services, with their more or less collective operation, are not adapted to provide demanding and intensive care for clients with a more severe form of disability,” reminded Prague councilor Milena Johnová.
