Pro-Russian and pro-Ukrainian protest in Frankfurt
Around 400 pro-Russian demonstrators took to the streets in Frankfurt on Sunday. Around 350 people attended a pro-Ukrainian counter-demonstration. The police prevented the two groups from meeting.
The Association of German-Russians in Hesse had also called groups from the so-called lateral thinkers to the pro-Russian demonstration, which began on Opernplatz. Following a rally at which, among other things, an end to the sanctions policy against Russia was demanded, the participants marched through the city center.
Protest in front of the Russian consulate
At the same time, around 350 people gathered at Goethe-Platz, just a few hundred meters away, for a pro-Ukrainian counter-demonstration. This, too, then moved through downtown Frankfurt. The demonstration ended around 3 p.m. at Eschenheimer Tor in the immediate vicinity of the Russian consulate.
According to the police, both events were peaceful, even if there were occasional provocations from both sides. A meeting of the two demonstration trains on the Opernplatz was prevented, the police added.
Note: In a first version, there was talk of 200 pro-Russian and 400 pro-Ukrainian participants in the demonstration. These numbers are based on information from the police. The police have since updated their estimates.
