De Croo, Lahbib, Van Quickenborne and Kitir represent Belgium at the UN General Assembly
The 77th session of the UN General Assembly will open in New York on September 19, against the backdrop of the Ukraine crisis. Belgium will be represented there by Prime Minister Alexander De Croo, Foreign Minister Hadja Lahbib, and Minister for Development Cooperation and Large Cities Policy Meryame Kitir, the FPS Foreign Affairs said on Sunday. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Justice and the North Sea Vincent Van Quickenborne will also be present to participate in some meetings. Alexander De Croo delivers the award to Belgium from the rostrum of the General Assembly on Friday 23 September.
The Belgian delegation will also have the opportunity to recall the priorities and themes dear to Belgium at the United Nations. She will also have the opportunity to meet many of her counterparts and key UN officials, on an irregular basis or in a multilateral format.
Prime Minister De Croo, in addition to his meeting with Secretary General Guterres and contacts transmitted on the sidelines of the General Assembly, will participate in events aimed at strengthening the rights of young people and women.
He will also speak before BelCham, the Belgian-American Chamber of Commerce and will award Belgian honorary distinctions to people who have distinguished themselves in the economic, scientific and cultural fields.
Hadja Lahbib will chair with European Commissioner Lenar?i? and the Democratic Republic of Congo an event on the theme of the fight against impunity for sexual violence.
In addition to the war in Ukraine, other challenges will be brought to this General Assembly such as climate change, respect for human rights, the fight against terrorism and violent extremism, respect for the rule of law and democratic principles or even the fight against impunity and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.
