Jimmy Nelson photographs 600 Dutch people in traditional costume on Museumplein
Born British photographer Jimmy Nelson has lived in Amsterdam since 1994, but is often far away, on vast steppes and in densely wooded jungles. Nelson travels the world with his camera in search of new tribes, new cultural and new experiences. He makes beautiful portraits of unknown peoples and also bundles them in photo books Before they pass and Tribute to humanity.
But during the corona pandemic, travel was not possible. And so Nelson used the bike from Amsterdam South and rode past the ring into the vast Netherlands. cycled past a fishing village and through polder landscapes, and traditional Dutch costumes. Nelson found the beauty of man in the Dutch provinces much closer than he had expected.
Ode to the Netherlands
In the book Between the sea and the sky he portrays war that he encountered while crossing the Netherlands in their traditional costume, from Axel in Zeeland to Hindeloopen in Friesland. It is Nelson’s most personal book yet: an ode to the culture of his adopted homeland.
To celebrate the launch of the book, 600 people gathered in traditional costume on Museumplein. A representation of the Dutch identity in the middle of the capital, captured forever on the sensitive plate.
