Farmers are protesting on the day when EU agriculture and fisheries ministers are meeting in Prague for an informal meeting. The event is organized by the Agrarian Chamber of the Czech Republic and the Agricultural Association of the Czech Republic. On the contrary, the protest action is criticized by the Association of Private Agriculture of the Czech Republic, which brings together mainly smaller farmers.

Both the chamber and the union have been protesting the government’s decision to shift a larger portion of subsidies to smaller farmers since the beginning of the year. They criticize that the government takes money from companies that produce most of the food in the Czech Republic, and warn that this will lead to a reduction in the production of, for example, poultry or pork. The protests are also intended to draw attention to the effects of environmental measures resulting from the Green Deal on agriculture, for example the demand for a significant reduction in the use of pesticides.

Thursday’s action took the form of a protest drive in several places in the country, and according to the chamber, hundreds of pieces of agricultural equipment were to be on the road in all regions. In Prague, near the Congress Center, they gave away the “last Czech” potatoes and apples to people, which is supposed to indicate that growers will be forced to reduce production.
