Remember 20 years since the flood with the IZS files (Portal of the City of Prague)
This year’s 20-year anniversary of the flood will be commemorated on Sunday, September 18, by a program on Slovanské ostrov prepared by the capital Prague in cooperation with partners. From 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., it will offer demonstrations of the technology and activities of the components of the Integrated Rescue System, competitions for interesting prizes, musical performances and other accompanying programs for adults and children. Free entry.
Professionals and volunteer firefighters, paramedics, police officers, constables, employees of the Central Services Administration will present themselves. m of Prague and others who helped with floods 20 years ago and will now demonstrate how they are prepared for heavy water. In addition to modern technology, there will also be practical demonstrations of the activities of the components of the Integrated Rescue System, including the construction of mobile flood defenses, at individual sites spread across the island.
Various activities are also prepared in which the visitors themselves can participate. For example, they will be able to try out how to “bag” – i.e. fill bags with sand. The bagging competition starts at approximately 11:30 a.m. In other competitions, interested parties will be able to test their skills or knowledge and win various valuable prizes, such as a family ticket to the zoo, tickets to the botanical garden, a family steamboat cruise around Prague or other practical prizes – an umbrella, a waterproof bag or an anti-theft backpack. There will be face painting or rides on the service boat of the City Police Hl. m of Prague and other fun activities.
Musical accompaniment will be provided by popular bands, among them the Dixie Band of the City Police Chief. m of Prague, the children’s band Kašpárek v rohlík, and the imaginary highlight of the day will be the concert of the Lake Malawi group.
The stage program will also offer a meeting with representatives of the capital city of Prague and those who took part in the rescue work 20 years ago. At that time, 15,000 people appeared on them, including about 4,000 police officers, 2,000 firefighters, 7,000 volunteer firefighters and approximately 2,000 soldiers.
The flood that hit Prague in August 2002 was the most destructive in its scope, flow and consequences in the modern history of the city. It lasted a total of 12 days and affected 5.8 percent of the city’s area. The damage reached almost 30 billion crowns, almost 50,000 inhabitants had to be evacuated.
