of students sleep in hotels due to lack of accommodation
The shortage of student accommodation is felt in Calais as the start of the school year has already begun. Some of them stay in Airbnb rentals or in hotels.
Finding student accommodation in Calais is not an easy task. Supply is much lower than demand and students are often on the waiting list when the start of the school year has already begun. This is particularly the case of Moroccan students who did not learn of their affection at the University of Littoral-Côte-d’Opale until the end of August.
Lise Masson, rental manager at the Laforêt agency, says: “I have already been told that, without accommodation, the person should stop their studies. There, currently, the students sleep in Airbnbs or hotels but these are not not long term solutions.
Housing shortages are likely to persist
Aurore, 18, who has just collected the keys to her 20m2 apartment, is then a lucky student. Since the beginning of July, his mother multiplied the visits and the contacts with the agencies, in vain. “There I was lucky enough to come across something clean, beautiful,” confirms her mother, Chantal Courbo.
Real estate agencies are overwhelmed with requests. “We receive between 10 and 15 requests a day,” confirms Jordy Flandrin, rental management advisor at the Guy Hoquet agency in Calais.
“As soon as we receive notice for a new accommodation, it is already rented after three days. Unfortunately, we have nothing left for the students”, he adds.
The shortage situation is not likely to improve next year because no construction of student residences is planned.
