Budapest’s only historic flower shop, Philanthia on Váci Street, is closed
You can still buy in the store until November.
One of the most interesting works of Hungarian art nouveau architecture is not a building, but a flower shop, the Philanthia flower shop at the bottom of Váci utca 9 since 1904, whose portal has stood against the storms of history and the destructive elements for one hundred and sixteen years now, since 1906.
THE Albert Kálmán Kőrössy according to his plans, a copper-inlaid portal (whose odd number of rose heads echoes at the end of Rákóczi út), as well as the shop interior, which is the only one in its category to have survived intact in Europe, has beautiful marquetry furnishings, and the walls Mark Lajos– oil paintings (about these interior photos can be seen here), however, we can only see it for a short time, since
– revealed from the place’s official Facebook pagewhere the exact reason for the closure was not published.
In the English-language post, the operators of the place write that they have to close their doors after ten years, so this year we will definitely not be able to see their Christmas window, which always gives a surprisingly intense experience.
THE Huszár Józsefné Jozefa Szabó the aim of the business was to make Budapest a city of flowers, and for that reason they obviously did everything, in fact, Eszter Baldavár from his research (Hungarian Architecture, 2019/4.) it is clear that the important cultural tasks were also carried out:
Celebrities often appeared among the customers, in fact, in 1916, ARC. Charles was taken from here for his coronation To Queen Zita also a bouquet of flowers, which the daughter of the mayor of Budapest, Irén Bárczy handed over.
