“RAFC is renting Birger Verstraete to KV Mechelen until the end of this season,” Royal Antwerp announces via social media. Verstraete is still under contract with red-white until 2024.
Malinwa received the green light from the Great Old on transfer deadline day and completed the transition in a few hours. Westerlo was also interested but fished behind the net.
Sporting director Tom Caluwé is delighted with the arrival of the midfielder. “Birger ticks everything we were looking for: someone for the defense with the required aggressiveness, footballing ability and insight. He also brings a lot of experience with him.”
“Mechelen from nothing”
Verstraete did not fit into the plans of trainer Mark van Bommel at Antwerp and was looking for a new employer. “I made it very clear to Antwerp that Mechelen was nothing,” says the Ostend resident on the Mechelen website. “This is the perfect match, with the club and with the public. And also the ideal solution for all parties. Both for me and for the two clubs.”
