the prison guards of Seysses say they are “at the end”, a blockage planned for Wednesday
On Wednesday, September 7, the guards of the Seysses remand center will block their prison establishment from 6 a.m. They say they are understaffed to handle 1,000 inmates. And they will have no reinforcements for this month of September.
They tell themselves “on”, “exhausted” And more and more “tense”. The supervisors of the Seysses penitentiary center in Haute-Garonne will block the prison from 6 a.m. to make their fed up heard, Wednesday September 7, 2022.
At least 30 guards are missing
“We are 250 supervisors in all, between all the services. We lack at least 30 agents to function normally. We are waiting for staff in this month of September but ultimately there will be no additional agent, we cannot don’t go on like this!”, explains David M., local SPS representative (prison guards’ union).
The Seysses penitentiary center has often been singled out for its problems of prison overcrowding and its degraded conditions of detention. It manages an average of 1000 detainees imprisoned for less than 700 places.
In July, justice had even been seized by lawyers from the Order of Toulouse and by the Observatory of prisons, who denounced the unworthy living conditions for the prisoners in Seysses, near Toulouse. This time it is the lack of staff that is highlighted.
A jail blockage
The supervisors are indeed sounding the alarm. They are authorized to mobilize in front of the penitentiary center from 6 a.m. Wednesday, September 7 to obtain more staff.
It’s a general disappointment. Some agents work between 50 and 80 hours of overtime per week. They are exhausted, it is no longer tenable. Above all, this creates tensions with the content.
David M. Local SPS Secretary
“Some security posts would not be covered” according to this union representative. An anger that is expressed in front of the penitentiary establishment on Wednesday.
