Port companies take up the challenge to clean up as much litter as possible in the port | Antwerp
AntwerpThe #PortCleanUpChallenge2022 of Port of Antwerp-Bruges will start on Monday 5 September. During the entire month of September, the port authorities will take up the challenge of cleaning up as much litter as possible in the port. Port alderman Annick De Ridder set a good example today, together with Jean-Paul ’10 minutes a day’ Meus, who will be sponsoring the challenge.
After the Port Clean-up campaign of 2021 – 1,200 people participated – the Port Authority is now opting for a #PortCleanUpChallenge2022. Companies active in the port are challenged, just like the own employees of the Port of Antwerp-Bruges, to clean up as much litter in the port as possible. Today the starting signal was given during a clean-up campaign in the port.
Harbor Tornadoes
“Litter does not belong in the Scheldt, the nature of the port,” said alderman Annick De Ridder. “In recent years, the Port Authority, together with companies in the port, has focused on raising awareness to prevent litter and floating waste, on clean-up campaigns and on innovations to prevent this problem. Port of Antwerp-Bruges is also taking actions to tackle the problem: port tornadoes clear up litter every day in the port of Antwerp, continuous Patje Plastic and Condor’s garbage collection get rid of floating waste and drones are used to control floating waste. ”

Trophy from litter
Jean-Paul Meus is known in Antwerp as an activist against litter with his ’10 minutes a day’. After launching numerous campaigns against litter himself, he is now putting his shoulders to the wheel in the port. “I have been cleaning up for 10 minutes straight for more than 2,300 days a day, but litter is a battle for all of us. I am therefore pleased that our port is taking this seriously,” said Meus.
There is also a prize attached to the Challenge. In the course of October, the most original team photo of the most active actions shared during the clean-up month will receive a trophy from the Antwerp artist collective ‘Trash Kids’, made of the collected litter.
