“Today in Prague, police officers supervised the announced gathering called the Action of Gratitude to the Citizens of the Czech Republic for their support of Ukraine. The gathering began at Wenceslas Square at noon, and the planned march to Old Town Square began at 1:00 p.m. During the entire event, we did not have to solve any problem,” Prague police spokesman Jan Daněk told Radiožurnál.
The participants, among whom there was a significant preponderance of women, carried Czech and Ukrainian flags, as well as a hand-made banner thanking them for the warm welcome in the Czech Republic. The exact number of Ukrainian refugees residing in the Czech Republic is not known.
At the end of August, half a year after the beginning of the Russian invasion, Vít Rakušan of the Ministry of the Interior (STAN) estimated their number at more than 300,000. So far, 424,302 Ukrainian refugees have received temporary protection visas.
According to the organizers of the largest domestic collections, the Czechs sent more than four billion crowns and more in support of Ukraine in half a year since the beginning of the Russian invasion.
In addition to helping victims of wars and refugees, the money is also used to purchase weapons for the Ukrainian army. The Czech Republic provided 3.8 billion crowns worth of military material.
