The Budapest Classic Film Marathon is organized in the spirit of Budapest, Vienna and Hollywood
With the motto Budapest, Vienna, Hollywood, the Budapest Classic Film Marathon will be organized between September 13 and 18 at several locations in the capital.
Year after year, the festival brings gems of film history to the Hungarian audience that cannot be seen on the big screen either before or after, the National Film Institute (NFI), which organized the series of events, told MTI on Wednesday.
This year’s locations of the Film Marathon will be the Toldi Cinema, the Uránia National Film Theater, Szent István tér and the French Institute.
On the opening day, at the Uránia National Film Theater, the audience can see one of the masterpieces of the Oscar-winning Mihály Kertész, The Creole King, in which Elvis Presley gives the best acting performance of his life in the main role, alongside Walter Matthau – highlighted the organizers.
On Szent István square, under the open sky, spectators can watch again the Winged Bounty Hunter, which has been shown for forty years, and the Catcatcher is also shown here, which the little ones can enjoy in Safranek, Teufel or Grabowski masks.
Also on the giant screen in front of St. Stephen’s Basilica, with a concert by the Győr Philharmonic Orchestra, the 1914 Mihály Kertész film A tolonc with Mari Jászai in the lead role and the Szelíd bikers who reformed American cinema are also shown.
The American classic praises the work of Hungarian cinematographer László Kovács, who emigrated in 1956. The renowned creator will be a returning actor for the 2022 Film Marathon. You can see Célpontok, as well as The last movie, as well as the documentary about him and his cinematographer friend Vilmos Zsigmond, who also has a great career in Hollywood.
As the organizers emphasized, the Film Marathon also provides countless opportunities to meet the creators. For example, the director of the Cannes Film Festival and the Lumiere Institute, Thierry Frémaux, will come to Budapest to present Lumiere with his live narration! – His film The Beginning of the Adventure.
Director Ferenc András and cinematographer Elemér Ragályi will present Dögkeselyű, Ildikó Bánsági will take part in the screening of My Diary, Erzsi Galambos will talk about her first film role, Quiet Home, before the screening of the film, while Judit Ember and Elemér will greet the viewers during the screening of The Island on the Land. .
In a discussion accompanying the animation masterpieces of the 65-year-old Pannónia Filmstúdió, directors Béla Ternovszky and István Orosz, cinematographer Zoltán Bacsó and production manager Edit Kő tell behind-the-scenes stories about the former legendary film workshop.
This year’s program also offers plenty of inspiration from the works of Mihály Kertész’s rich career in Hollywood and before that. The NFI’s press release states that the Devil of the Seven Seas, The Sea Wolf, The Wind of Scandal, Casablanca, as well as A Tolonc, filmed in Pest, and Young Medardus, recorded in Vienna, are scheduled to be broadcasted by him.
