A record number of nominees for the Narrative Prize 2022
The power of storytelling:
– Many of this year’s stories maintain a sky-high level, says the jury leader.
Last year, 97 entries were nominated for the Teller Prize. Then, due to the pandemic, it was allowed to nominate contributions from the last two years. This year, the nominated contributions have been published from last summer to 24 June this year. Nevertheless, a total of 118 contributions came in, which is a new record.
During the summer, the jury, appointed by the force of the Story, has singled out 15 finalists. The jury consists of:
- Stinne Andreasseneditorial manager at Kristelig Dagblad and incoming digital manager at Berlingske Tidende.
- Martin Johnsonjournalist and CEO of the Nordic podcast producer Third Ear Studio.
- Jenny Duesundjournalist and editor-in-chief at NRK.
- Thomas Ergojournalist in Stavanger Aftenblad and board member of Fortellingen kraft
- Jesper Gaarskjærjournalist, author and associate professor at Denmark’s Media and Journalism Academy.
To be announced at the conference
On Friday last week, the jury met for an all-day meeting in Kristelig Dagblad’s premises in Copenhagen. After a few hours of discussion, the finalists were boiled down to one main winner and a bunch of diploma winners.
Who made the best narrative journalism last year was announced at the Power of Narrative conference in Bergen 21 to 23 September.
– Many of this year’s stories maintain a sky-high level. They grab us with the narrator’s claw and don’t let go until the story is over. We are carried away, impressed, amazed and enlightened. We have allowed ourselves to be provoked, we have laughed and cried, says jury leader Gaarskjær in a press release. He continues:
– Getting to go through the rich narrative flora in Norwegian journalism has been quite an experience.
Big variation
Among the short stories nominated, there was a great variety in genres. Everything from eyewitness accounts from felt and hard-hitting investigative journalism, to strong human encounters or information reports with an emphasis on visual presentations.
These are short reports that take a few minutes to read, and podcast series that require hours.
Most of the nominations come from the established media houses, with NRK (27), VG (21) and Dagens Næringsliv (14) at the top. 104 written reports, 16 podcasts and 7 TV reports have been nominated.
Last year, journalist won Kjersti Mjør from the Bergens Tidende Teller prize, while it won a diploma for Dagens Næringsliv, NRK, VG and Monster.
