Lavrov: Russia is doing everything to ensure that the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant can operate safely
We are doing everything to ensure that this plant is safe, that it operates safely. And that the mission there is fulfilling all its plans, Lavrov said at an event held in Moscow, according to Agerpres. At the same time, the Russian Ministry of Defense said on Thursday that the situation at the plant is difficult, but remains under full control, after reports of fighting in Enerhodar, a town near the plant, appeared.
In a statement on the Telegram app, the Russian Defense Ministry said it was still ready to guarantee the safety of the IAEA delegation at the plant, despite what the Russian institution described as Kiev’s efforts to disrupt the visit.
Earlier, Ukraine accused Russia of bombing the plant in an attempt to thwart the visit of IAEA inspectors. At the same time, an official installed by the Russians in the city of Enerhodar, Aleksandr Volga, told the Russian state news agency TASS that the city was without electricity on Thursday, but that there was no reason why the planned visit of IAEA inspectors could not take place. The Zaporozhye nuclear power plant was captured by invading Russian forces in March. The plant, located near the front lines, has been the target of various attacks in recent weeks, raising fears of a nuclear disaster, Reuters notes, adding that both sides – Russia and Ukraine – have accused each other of bombing the plant.
