The first day of school in the new school: a super-modern school has opened in Prague 9, take a look
“We want to show what a modern school building can look like, but by placing a new gymnasium classroom here, it also shows what the structure of Prague’s secondary education could look like,” said Prague councilor Vít Šimral (Pirates). He added that the city is also building a smaller similar building at the nearby Secondary Vocational School in Jarov.
The reconstruction project was developed by Ecoten. She was during repairs the building from the 1970s was stripped down to the skeleton and received a new shell, facades and complete interiors and technical facilities. The owner of the company Eco Jiří Tencar mentioned the low shell as unique, which is practically entirely made of wood and has a very high carbon footprint. “It was invented by colleagues at CTU and it was used here for the first time,” he said.
As the second unique element, Tencar highlighted the electricity consumption management system. There is extensive photovoltaics on the roof of the school and a large-capacity battery for storing electricity in the building. In addition, the building is connected to the distribution system and has a system that determines the algorithm for dealing with electricity in advance, taking into account the weather forecast.
“It practically means that if we have excess energy, we sell it in the two daily peaks, when it is the most expensive. in the winter we are not self-sufficient, so we buy it at night, when it is assumed to be the cheapest, and then we are cut off from the grid on the contrary,” he explained. The school is heated by a heat pump.
Unique equipment
From the point of view of pupils and teachers, Tencar mentioned in particular the management of the environment in the classrooms, which was also highlighted by the school principal. “Before students enter the classroom, they change the air, we adjust the blinds, we monitor the thermal conditions, vehicle conditions, light conditions“, said Ležal. An atrium, a workout field, a ping-pong table, Russian skittles and other leisure activities are also available for pupils. In addition to the dining room, there is also a cafe on the premises. Ležal added that, in addition to the mentioned one high school class, this year the school opened the fields of mechanical electrical engineering and chemical operator.
Ceremonial opening of the revitalized building of the Prague Secondary Vocational School – Vocational Training Center and Gymnasium in Českobrodská Street, September 1, 2022. The original school building was rebuilt into a smart, safe and sustainable one, resulting in the first energy- and carbon-positive school building in the Czech Republic.
