The first poetry lecturer is the author and journalist Lena Gorelik, who will give a public lecture on November 30 in the Literaturhaus. The actual seminar is then aimed exclusively at enrolled students at Leibniz University.
The new we
Lena Gorelik was born in St. Petersburg in 1981, has lived in Germany since 1992 and drew attention to herself with a number of novels (“More Black than Purple”, 2017), she was nominated for the German Book Prize (“Wedding in Jerusalem”, 2007) and Youth Book Award nominated. Her current book “Who we are” was published last year.

The jury praised Lena Gorelik’s texts as “an aesthetically complex expression of a literature of the many, which not only demands attention to a post-migrant reality in Germany, but also addresses this in all its ambivalence”.
Matthias Lorenz, professor of literature at Leibniz University, is enthusiastic: “Such a lectureship takes into account the fact that we are a heterogeneous society.” It is also about the “new we”. The lectureship will ask about “writing styles in a diverse and post-migrant society”.
form society
According to Lena Gorelik, the invitation comes at the right time, because the German language is currently being expanded by other languages. Her aim is to show that “literature not only depicts society, but also educates it”. Her seminar should not only be about texts, but also about creative writing.
This lectureship is designed to last and is managed by the VGH Foundation. Every year, an author is invited for the winter semester, who then offers a block seminar at the university. In the following summer semester there will also be readings and discussions.
This lectureship is sponsored by the Chair for Modern German Literature at the Leibniz University and the Literature House. The lectureship is awarded by jury decision.
