Prague 5: Nature as a powerful witch Na Neklance
31/08/2022 8:38 | Press Release
“Where else can a city person relax better than in the forest or in the garden. We create a relationship with nature throughout our lives, and it is nature that accompanies us at every stage of life and has a significant meaning for us. It surrounds us at every step, but it depends on everyone how they perceive it,” says councilor JUDr. Petr Lachnit.
In our senior age, we observe and listen to the voice of nature especially sensitively, some of us cannot imagine an apartment without plants, or a house without a garden, growing plants and the joy of them never fades. It is said that we are a nation of cottagers and gardeners, and this fact is also confirmed by our clients from the Social Services Center with relief service at Na Neklance 15. This service is intended for senior citizens and their families for a limited period of time that the family needs for her rest, to gain strength for further care of her family member.
The staff of the home offer seniors a wide variety of morning and afternoon activation programs that help maintain and improve their overall condition. In addition to regular exercise, memory training, musical performances and art activities, we offer garden therapy, which is one of the most popular. Activation blocks of this therapy, which is a unique method for improving the condition of our clients, take place regularly in the atrium of the house and in the common room.

The garden serves as a therapeutic medium and working with plants activates both physically and mentally. On the one hand, energy is gained, memory is activated, the senses are stimulated, motor skills are improved and creativity is increased. On the other hand, this activity helps in reducing stress, inducing calmness, concentration and relaxation.
Garden therapy blocks are regularly included in the activation program throughout the year, but it is of course mainly used from late spring to autumn. Every year in the atrium, clients add new annuals and carefully care for the bushes of roses, rhododendrons and various evergreen plants. This year, we have newly planted living walls, which were created on the magical wall of the house, that is, a living flowering wall, on which many a visitor to the service house admires the social surroundings. With the arrival of summer, the aviary with our parakeets, which belong here and have been successfully kept by clients at Na Neklance, moved to the outdoor space.
The atrium is a green, blooming oasis with birdsong, where not only clients like to sit, but also their visitors, to whom the seniors like to brag about their cultivation successes. As her seedling slowly strengthens and grows, it is a joy for them and a reward for their daily care and attention. With the coming cold days, we will then move most of the potted plants indoors, where the clients transplant and care for the next season.
Natural objects are an integral part of the decorations in the interior of the entire house. As part of their creative activities, our clients create, for example, moss paintings or various wooden hangings on the wall. It is a piece of art that creates the overall family atmosphere of the house. But garden therapy is not only about the garden and growing plants, it is medicine and has become a natural part of the life of our facility. And then isn’t nature a powerful witch? It certainly is, it has become a proven recipe for the human soul here as well.
