AntwerpFrom September 2022 to June 2023, the Letterenhuis will examine writers’ biographies, memoirs, autofiction and egodocuments. The program includes performances, writing workshops, reading clubs, lectures, meetings and unique depot visits.
Writers’ biographies have become an integral part of library bookshops. Recently the life histories of the Flemish authors JMH Berckmans (2018), Paul Méral (2020), Emmanuel de Bom (2021), Hendrik Conscience (2021), Marnix Gijsen (2022) and Roger van de Velde (2020) – that of Maurice Gilliams will be published this fall. The biographies of Louis Paul Boon, Hugo Claus, Paul van Ostaijen and Paul Snoek are in preparation.
The program for the biography year of the Letterenhuis includes performances, writing workshops, reading clubs, lectures, meetings and unique depot visits. During such a visit, the public, together with a guide, takes an exercise in the archive depot of the Letterenhuis to discover 3.5 km of literary archive, full of stories about how writers work and live. A gold mine for biographies and readers. In addition, visitors can see some special and personal pieces up close. As a result, they discover unexpected and unknown stories from the archives of Hendrik Conscience, Virginie Loveling, Paul van Ostaijen and Kristien Hemmerechts.
