“To include this space in the area where strategic control is held” – Event of the Day
Alexander Dugin claims that Romania and the Republic Moldavia they should unite under the umbrella and in the interests of Russia. It is what is called a very tempting “poisoned gift” through which Moscow could expand its influence and control over the Balkans.
“Moscow must strive to carry out this unification according to its interests, to include this space in the area where it has direct strategic control,” said Alexandr Dughin.
In his opinion, Romanian culture follows “the typical Orthodox model that directly unites these lands with Eurasia”. And the only obstacle he sees in the implementation of this project would be “the geopolitical proximity (of Romania – n. ed.) to the Catholic regions”. More precisely, the so-called obstacle is Romania’s membership in NATO and the European Union.
Alexandr Dughin goes further and insists that the pro-Russian separatist territory, Transnistria, should also be part of the new state. However, it is known that the problem in Transnistria is the Russian army that encourages the actions of the separatists. And this problem – of separatist tensions – would be transferred to the new Romanian state, if such a situation were reached, according to Romania TV.
Dughin proposes the union under the umbrella of Moscow
Dughin also claims that the area of Ukraine, Moldova, Romania, up to Serbia should “turn into a unitary strategic and cultural region – actually into one country”. And “Moscow must be the initiator of Moldovan-Romanian integration – placed, from the very beginning, under the Orthodox and Eurasian sign”.
Alexandr Dughin has many admirers in Romania, despite his controversial theories that want to increase Russian influence, Adrian Năstase, Adrian Severin or Dan Puric are among those who have expressed themselves without hesitation in this regard.
A large number of Romanians, 75%, want the union with the Republic of Moldova, according to an INSCOP survey, conducted in January 2022. In contrast, only 30% of Moldovans are categorically pro-unionbecause of the Russophile population.
A theory from Stalin’s time
This theory is far from original. Soviet Russia has tried such a proposal before, since the time of Stalin, in order to draw under its influence in West Germany. At the time, the Soviets were waving to the Germans the prospect of unification between Communist Germany and Federal Germany under Soviet influence.
The proposals were rejected at the time by the western chancellors, who preferred to stay with the West. Incidentally, the unification of Germany was achieved in 1990, when the USSR collapsed and the communist regimes collapsed.
