“I will probably surprise you, we work very closely with the Republic of Moldova. Our brothers across the Prut have some exceptional digitization solutions and are recognized worldwide, they are across Estonia.
They have over two hundred fully online public services. For them, the problem is that relatively few citizens, about 200-300 thousand use technology because they do not have digital skills, but they have all public services online, including vehicle registration, and life events, and in the registration of some companies, to example, i.e. they have gone digital. We have a protocol with them, they don’t provide these practical solutions for free and they come to us in the country, and we test them from the point of view of cyber security, to be safe, to still be able to apply to a lot of countries, to a market. bigger,” said Sebastian Burduja, Minister of Research, Innovation and Digitization.
Chirieac: So I can’t believe it
“So I can’t believe it. Is the Republic of Moldova helping Romania?” Bogdan Chirieac asked in surprise.
“Yes, and I do it, how can I tell you, with all my hands and with a more long-term concept. to promote these solutions, to export them together with them to other developing countries”, explained Sebastian Burduja.
Why Romania remained last in the EU in terms of digital competitiveness, according to the DESI 2022 report
The lack of digital skills has negative effects on all other components.
Romania ranks 27th out of the 27 EU member states in the 2022 edition of the Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI). It is important to note that its relative annual growth is lower than that of similar countries, indicating that it is not converging with the rest of the Member States. The country lags behind on a number of indicators of the extent of human capital, with a very low level of basic digital skills compared to the EU average, but maintains a leading position in terms of the proportion of female ICT specialists in the force of work (2nd place) in terms of the number of ICT graduates (4th place).
A significant change in Romania’s pace of training in terms of digital skills is to reach the digital decade’s goal of basic digital skills and ICT specialists. Romania performs relatively well in terms of connectivity, this being the dimension to achieve the best score.
The country’s performance in terms of the integration of digital technologies and digital public services is poor compared to that of EU member states. The share of SMEs that have at least a basic level of digital intensity (22 %) and the percentage of businesses that exchange information electronically (17 %) are the lowest in the EU.
