The first baby kangaroo in history was born in the Prague Zoo. The little kangaroo was born to a five-year-old female who came to Prague from the Polish Opole Zoo, and a two-year-old male originally from the Jihlava Zoo. It informs about it Zoo Prague.
“We are all the more delighted with the addition as it is the first ever rat kangaroo born in our zoo,” introduced by the director of the Prague Zoo, Miroslav Bobek. According to him, the new resident of the zoo is important on an international scale, as it has been on the Red List of the International Union for the Protection of Animals (IUCN) since 2014, where it is now it falls to category “near threatened animals”.
The situation is getting better for the little kangaroo. In his homeland in the east of Australia, his natural habitat disrupt human settlement, agriculture, forestry, livestock grazing, non-native predators and increasingly frequent fires.
“If the current trend continues, its population may drop by almost a third in some places in the next 12 years. Every breeding success like this gives us the hope we need for future years,” says Filip Mašek, spokesman for the Prague Zoo.
nevertheless, the tiny marsupial only peeked out of its mother’s pouch for the first time last week, and you can already observe it in the exhibition in Darwin Craterwhich is located in the lower part of the zoo and you will find animals of Tasmanian and Australian fauna in it.
