If you want to join Brussels since Luxemburgthis news should delight you: on a section of this axis, the trains run faster.
A colossal step forward in the context of the modernization of axis 3 depending on the two countries.
Faster trains to save 20 minutes
The Ministry of Mobility of Luxembourg specifies, on Friday August 26, 2022, that the “section of line 162 ‘Namur-Arlon/frontière’ located between Hatrival and the Luxembourg border will pass from 3 kV continuous to 25 kV alternative”.
This allows “greater flexibility in the circulation of trains and the use of heavier trains and this at a higher speed” on this section of 66 kilometers.
According to Infrabel (in charge of the Belgian infrastructure), this change represents a time saving of 20 minutes. A Luxembourg-Brussels journey so far takes just under three hours.
150 million euros of works
This changeover to 25 kV, Luxembourg has already done it entirely on its network in 2018. This is not the case on the Belgian side.
The teams of Infrabel and its subsidiary TUC Rail launched a colossal project in 2010 to reduce travel time between the two neighboring countries, in particular via the re-electrification.
It is of major importance to continue to invest in the railways so that the mobility of tomorrow is multimodal and for interoperability across borders. Today’s completion of this work represents an essential step in the modernization of the “Brussels-Luxembourg” axis.
Total cost of the operation on the Belgian side: around 150 million eurosincluding around thirty million from European funds.
