Triathlon Zell: Local hero Hollaus fourth
After swimming 1.9 kilometers, cycling 90 kilometers and running 21 kilometers, Hollaus finished fourth and missed the podium by 44 seconds. As the fastest Austrian, he secured the Austrian championship title over half the Ironman distance.
Victory in the internationally strong men’s race went to the German Frederic Funk after 3:50.24 hours – ahead of the Italian Gregory Barnaby and last year’s winner Jan Stratmann from Germany. In the women’s category, Emma Pallant from Britain secured victory – she needed 4:21.43 hours for the distance. Australia’s Grace Thek came in second, Italy’s Giorgia Priarone was third.
Mudslide in the morning
In the morning there was a mudslide in the rain on a 200 meter long section of the bike route between Hinterthal and Saalfelden. There were no effects on road traffic because the route is closed anyway because of the triathlon. However, the fire brigade had to do a lot to clear the road again.
For the athletes, the Mure means that they may have to push their bikes around 200 meters, according to the race management.
Road closures to car traffic in effect
Due to the triathlon, thoroughfares were closed in large parts of the Pinzgau. For weeks, information about the location, type and duration of the bans could be found on the Internet: in German, English and even Arabic.
In recent years there have been occasional protests by motorists. That’s why the information has been increased again this year, said Renate Ecker, tourism director of Zell am See: “We’re done with radio advertising comprehensive mailings, informed in the newspapers. The municipalities and hoteliers have also informed themselves. Everything possible has been done to provide information here. Police, fire brigade, ambulance are all there. The municipalities are also behind the ten-year anniversary.”
Access to the hospital by car only in emergencies
The Zell am See hospital is also affected by the closures. Access by car is not possible there on Sunday. Medical emergencies and rescue trips are excluded.
