Prague’s Jiřího z Poděbrady Square will undergo a transformation that has been talked about for more than 20 years. Council of the Capital City of Prague approved the financing of the project, which will bring more trees to the popular square, restore fountains, wheelchair-accessible elevators, and rainwater retention tanks. The transformation will begin in 2023.
“Náměstí Jiřího z Poděbrady is a public space of city-wide importance, which also directly connects to Vinohradská Street, which is one of the most important streets in the city. Jiřího z Poděbrady has such great cultural significance and people spend a lot of time here, but due to its current state it cannot be fully used. Therefore, based on many negotiations, we decided that its restoration will be financed from the budget of the capital city,Petr Hlaváček, First Deputy Mayor, spoke about the transformation.
Náměstí Jiřího z Poděbrady will finally see the transformation it so much deserves. It will have 150 new trees, greenery, an irrigation system working with rainwater, fountains will be restored and wheelchair-accessible lifts will be built on it.
“150 new trees will be added, the fountain will be restored, rainwater retention tanks will be created, and barrier-free elevators will be built during the subway reconstruction. I am very happy that Prague is becoming a green city without obstacles,” she wrote on Twitter Olga Richterová (Pirates).
The aim of the transformation is to create a dignified environment near the Church of the Most Sacred Heart of the Lord, to improve accessibility, but also to improve the safety of residents. “The main attraction for residents are the traditional markets, which are of course expected. They will move further from the primary school. The children’s playground will also be renovated, which will be expanded and will have new game elements and water attractions. The square will also be complemented by a barrier-free entrance to the metro, which is already under construction,” added Jiří Ptáček, mayor of Prague 3.
The public was also involved in the planned project, who could comment on its form.
