Senate building director wants to dismantle oversized roads
Not just “build more” and “build better”: Petra Kahlfeld, Berlin Senate Building Director, has very precise ideas about which areas in Berlin should be used and how new and how new buildings should be built.
Oversized streets and parking lots in Berlin should be demolished according to the will of Senate Building Director Petra Kahlfeldt (independent). What is needed is a critical revision of the existing city, said the senior official in the Senate administration of Senator Andreas Geisel (SPD). the DPA, as reported on Sunday.
The conversion is necessary to lead Berlin into a sustainable future, Kahlfeldt continues. That would have to be done in dialogue with the population.
Kahlfeld will have less freeway space in Berlin
New green and seepage areas could be created on and along these car lanes, as well as apartments. Far too many areas have been sacrificed to traffic. Specifically, Kahlfeldt names the branch of the A100 that leads to Breitenbachplatz in Steglitz-Zehlendorf, the A103 in Steglitz and the Spittelmarkt in Mitte. These are city-destroying traffic spaces. There is also a need for a well-developed and attractive local public transport system that only takes up half of the street space.
The transport policy spokesman for the CDU in the House of Representatives, Oliver Friederici, spoke out against Kahlfeld’s move. He told the rbb24 evening show on Sunday that dismantling parts of the A100 or A103, for example, was illusory. People would have to get from A to B and delivery traffic would have to be able to drive. The money that the dismantling would cost should be better used in the expansion of cycle paths and sidewalks and for public transport. The freeways also relieved other roads through which traffic would otherwise travel.
Use already sealed surfaces differently and better
In addition, the construction director pleaded for an appropriate closing of vacant lots: it had to be built higher and on surfaces that were already sealed.
When it comes to urban redevelopment, not only new quarters and new construction projects should be considered. Integrated development of all urban functions is needed. This also includes work and leisure opportunities, schools, day-care centers, cultural offerings, Handel, urban green areas or shaded areas, as well as short distances. Overall, it’s about making Berlin more liveable.
Kahlfeldt positively emphasized that Berlin has a resilient settlement and urban infrastructure because it has many and many different centers.
