The secondary school in Prague was rebuilt: The light, heat and ventilation there are controlled by a computer
The unique reconstruction of a more than forty-year-old school is nearing completion. As the contact person at SŠ COPTH in Poděbradská Street told Bleska, the final preparations at the branch in Českobrodsk are in full swing. Pupils should start school on the first of September.
The unique project was completed after 6 years. Only the supporting structure remains from the original building from the 1970s. This has become the backbone of a brand new “smart building” controlled by a central computer system, which enables full monitoring, control and planning of building equipment functions.
“As part of the construction work, there was not only a new architectural solution that, among other things, makes more efficient use of the existing premises of the building, but also the transformation of highly energy-demanding buildings into a in a plus energy standard with an integrated intelligent control system,” says Vít Hofman, press spokesman for the Prague municipality.
In addition, the entire school is designed using natural elements. A large part of the structure is wooden. Likewise, the facade is made of Siberian larch wood, which will naturally age together with the building and will gradually be overgrown with climbing plants. The roofs are also green, on which resistant non-bulrushes are planted.
Science fiction in practice
The school has a lot of “aces” up its sleeve like from a movie related to technology. The lights will shine accordingly, but only into the sun’s rays. In order to save energy as much as possible, they have built-in people movement detectors. Each student must log in with an electronic card. For example, they won’t give him lunch in the cafeteria without registration. The doors to the classrooms are glass, which enhances transparency.
The layout of the school is suitable for people with limited mobility and orientation. “The newly created teaching spaces will be used for the education of pupils in fields of education completed by the matriculation exam in the field of electrical engineering and chemistry,” informs Vít Hofman. The building belongs to energy class “A” with exceptional efficiency. It will need the same or even less energy than it produces from its own pumps and rooftop solar panels.

The school is established by the municipality. The project in Hrdlořez received the prestigious SBToolCZ gold quality certificate even before the completion of the implementation, which recognized the complexity of the renovation. “It is the first building of this type in Prague, and we have already started preparing another event of a similar kind in Jarov,” comments Vít Hofman. The city received money for the reconstruction from the EU subsidy program Prague – pole of growth. The total price rose to almost 200 million crowns.
