Thunderstorms in the Hanover region: several operations for the fire brigade
Hanover. Lightning strike, water damage, fallen trees: The thunderstorm predicted for Friday swept over the Hanover region in the early evening – and called the fire brigade into action. While the state capital only recorded heavy rainfall, the emergency services had to move out in Wedemark and in Gleidingen (Laatzen). The warning apps “Katwarn” and “Nina” had also been triggered in advance for the northern part of the region.

“We had three to four missions,” says Benjamin Bohlmann, spokesman for the Wedemark fire department. That was the most important thing in his area. A fallen tree on Isernhägener Damm between Bissendorf and Wietze started around 5:40 p.m. There is another tree and a fallen telephone pole on a dirt road. In addition, the helpers moved to Wennebostel-Wietze, where a terrace was under water. Bohlmann: “Three local firefighters were deployed.” Around 7 p.m. everything calmed down.
Thunderstorm: roof burns after lightning strike in Gleidingen
The rescuers in Laatzen-Gleidingen, on the other hand, were already challenged in the late afternoon when the first thunderstorm cell over the region. The emergency call came in at 4:48 p.m. Lightning probably struck the roof of a single-family home on the Ringstrasse. Residents smelled smoke, but no one was injured. However, the photovoltaic system on the building made extinguishing the fire difficult. It was not until 6.15 p.m. that the operation was over, there was a hole in the roof. The extent of the damage is not yet known.

Meteorologists had already warned of the storm on Friday in advance, and the Freitags Deutschland (RND) even spoke of a “cooking pot weather situation” – because the experts could not clearly predict where it would ultimately boil over and the storm would really get going. It is now clear that in Schleswig-Holstein, northern Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg in particular there were flooded basements and flooded streets. Berlin even declared a state of emergency, and among other things, the band “Die Ärzte” canceled their concert on Tempelhofer Feld at short notice.
