Prague – A strong storm and rain hit Prague in the early evening today. In addition to fallen trees, firefighters also went out to flooded roads and buildings. A tree fell over tram trolleys in Otakarova Street in Prague 4 and in Ječná Street in Prague 2, the fire department said on twitter. Water also flooded the underpass at the Prague Vršovice railway station. Data from the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (ČHMÚ) show that the Botič river in Nuslí rose to the second flood stage at 6:00 p.m.
“Until 6:20 p.m. in Prague, we intervened or are still intervening in 20 cases related to heavy rain and thunderstorms. For example, in Ječná Street, we developed a tree over the tram tracks. Most of the cases at the moment are for uprooted or fallen trees. Most in the wider center “, the firemen said.
A fallen tree in Ječná Street restricted traffic in the vicinity of IP Pavlova Square, affecting the operation of tram lines 6, 10, 16, 22 and 23. The lines were diverted in the direction from the IP Pavlova station to Karlové náměstí via the Bruselská, Otakarova, Divadlo na Fidlovačce stops, Albertov, Karlovo náměstí. The tram line between Trojská and Nádraží Holešovice stations is flooded, line number 17 is stopped.
In Vršovice, water flooded the underpass. “At the Praha-Vršovice station, the underpass is flooded after the storm. For these reasons, access to the platform is limited for passengers,” České dráhy reported on twitter.
The Říčka Botič rose to the second flood level at 6:00 p.m., but 20 minutes later the level started to drop again.
The thunderstorm warning is valid for today from 12:00 to 23:00 for almost the entire Czechia, with a visit to parts of the Olomouc and Moravian-Silesian regions. The storms will be very strong in the whole of Bohemia, with total precipitation of up to 50 millimeters, i.e. 50 liters per square meter. About 40 millimeters of rain will fall in Moravia.
On Saturday afternoon, strong storms will return to most of the Czech Republic. The warning applies again on Saturday from 12:00 to 23:00 for the entire country except for the Ústí Region, Karlovy Vary Region and Pilsen Region. Meteorologists expect up to 40 millimeters of rain and hail.
