Prague schools: 3,000 children of Ukrainian refugees will enter in September
Elementary schools in Prague are established primarily by city districts, with a smaller part by churches or private operators. The majority of Ukrainian children, a total of 2,910, are estimated to attend public schools. Ukrainian children had a special registration deadline, the city districts already included them in regular classes or so-called adaptation groups before that.
Some schools reported for the integration of refugees in the past school year capacity issues. In such a case, a special law for elementary schools to request an increase in capacity without the opinion of hygienists or the building authority up to for a maximum of 34 pupils in a class and kindergartens for 28 children. If they do not have a place in regular classes, they can also create separate classes for Ukrainian refugees.
War refugees from Ukraine started arriving in the Czech Republic after the start of the Russian attack on Ukraine on February 24. According to the Ministry of the Interior, approximately 419,000 of them have received visas since the beginning of the invasion, almost a quarter of them in Prague. However, I do not know the exact number of refugees from before the war who live in the Czech Republic. Some of them go to other countries or return to Ukraine. In June, the authorities estimated that around 280,000 to 300,000 refugees remained in the Czech Republic. According to the Ministry of the Interior, children and youth under the age of 18 made up about a third as of June 22.
Two classes for children of Ukrainian refugees have opened at the High School of International and Public Relations in Prague Stodůlky. Ukrainian teachers and high school students who are of Ukrainian origin help with their teaching. A singing performance by small pupils was also part of the ceremonial opening of the school. They sang the Ukrainian song Ukraina, that’s you. (March 25, 2022) David Winter
