Tottenham, Lisbon, Marseille – Attractive group for Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League | hessenschau.de
Eintracht Frankfurt is up against well-known opponents in the Champions League. Fans who love to travel can look forward to trips to England, Portugal and France.
Eintracht Frankfurt will face Tottenham Hotspur, Sporting Lisbon and Olympique Marseille in the club’s first Champions League season. That was the result of the draw on Thursday in Istanbul, Turkey. The Hessians are the group head of group D. “We fell into an attractive and highly attractive group. We are very much looking forward to this challenge,” said sports director Markus Krösche after the draw.
The group is as attractive as it is unpredictable. Eintracht has avoided big names like Liverpool and Inter Milan, but they haven’t been drawn to supposedly easy opponents like Donetsk or Haifa either. Everything seems possible for the Hessians in Group D: progress, spend the winter in the Europa League or simply be eliminated. “Despite the strength of our opponents, our goal is to qualify for the round of 16,” said Krösche confidently.

Not good memories of Tottenham
Tottenham Hotspur qualified fourth in the Premier League for the Premier League. Eintracht last met the north Londoners in 1982. Eintracht were eliminated in the quarter-finals of the Cup Winners’ Cup after losing 2-0 in the first leg and winning 2-1 in the second leg.
Sporting Lisbon comes from the supposedly weaker Portuguese league, but being second in the table, the capital city are no less dangerous. The French second in the table Olympique Marseille is still in the best memories of the Europa League for Eintracht fans. In the away game in southern France, the Eintracht fans had to stay outside in the group phase in 2018, but the Hessians prevailed 2-1 and 4-0. The group back then, by the way: Group D.
