Rohan City: A unique school for 800 children will be established in Prague 8
A unique will be created in Palmovka modern elementary School with a capacity for up to 800 pupils, it will serve not only pupils and teachers, but also the wider public the public as a place for recreation and meeting. It fits into the planned end of the Rohan City administrative-apartment complex, where in the future there will be a development with municipal and private apartments and administrative buildings.
The project proposal was presented by representatives of the Prague 8 Municipal Council together with Studio AXX1 architects, who won the architectural competition. “The construction of a primary school in this locality is practical a condition for being able to build here. For investors who plan to implement their projects here, consistently we insist on that to more generally on amenities around – whether it’s a school, kindergarten or high-quality public space,” says Tomáš Hřebík (STAN), Prague 8 councilor for strategic development, about the future of Rohanské ostrov.
Accessible to all
Palmovka awaits in future years a lot changes, which together will transform this part of Prague into one of the most attractive districts. “The city park school, as my colleague and I called it at work, will happen the heart of construction on Rohan Island,” presents a design by one of the architects, Luděk Šimoník. The proposal is therefore conceived so that the building serves not only during classes, but 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Such an approach is the exact opposite of the trend, where city representatives and school principals are trying to devise a way to ensure as much as possible for foreigners to enter the school, on the contrary, mainly because safety.
In this case it has safety ensure the principle of so-called social control. “Very simply, where you can see, you can do something control. The school should be as open as possible, which means that the outside will have a good view of the inside, and the building must be as clear as possible on the inside,” architect Šimoník explains to Blesk. In practice, this principle works so that, for example, sprayer or other vandal he chooses as his target rather an object that is unguarded and tucked away, rather than going to a place where parents play with their children and is in full view. The public will therefore be able to use it school sports fieldoutdoor spaces, but also, for example, an auditorium or a dining room, while the campus will have two main entrancesone for pupils and the other for the public.
Sustainability and efficiency
In addition to this social significance of the building, it is also expected that the school will be a significant part energy self-sufficient. The roof of the gymnasium will be equipped with FVE panels, which will supply energy for lighting. Roofs and all other surfaces are designed to capture maximum rainwaterwhich the building utilizes for flushing or irrigation of green roofs. The construction is estimated to cost approx billion crowns and construction could start in 2026, but it is important that the timing works together with the surrounding construction.
Roughly half of the city hall’s money comes from its development fund, which by mutual agreement includes the developers who build in Prague 8. The rest of the money the city district will want to get from the municipality or the Ministry of Education. The town hall will also pay for the project and other steps to start construction from the fund.
