Prague – transport: There are almost as many cars as there are people in the city
It is in the metropolis 4,067 kilometers of roads. Of the total number of vehicles registered in Prague, the majority are passenger cars, of which there are 970,755. In 2020, authorities in the metropolis recorded 925,716 passenger cars, in 2019 it was 911,844 cars. Compared to the rest of the Czech Republic, the number of cars registered in the metropolis is roughly one seventh of the total number of cars in the country. The most cars were added between 1990 and 2000, when their number doubled.
Last year, drivers drove 22,956 million kilometers around Prague, in 2020 it was 21,482 million kilometers, according to the yearbook. As in previous years, passenger cars drove the most. In the past two years, the intensity of traffic has changed. It fell by eight percent in 2020, rose again last year and almost equaled the pre-Covid year 2019, according to the data.
»Barranďák« is the busiest
According to them, the busiest road in Prague last year was the Barrandovský most, which was crossed by 142,000 cars every day. Compared to the year before last, this is 8,000 cars more. The second busiest is Strakonická in the section between Dobříšská and Barrandovský most and the third is Southern clutch in the section between Chodovská and V Koryty. The currently repaired Barrandovský most is also nthe busiest bridge over the Vltava. They are second behind him Hlávka’s and the third Radotínský.
The busiest common intersection is intersection of Poděbradská and Kbelská with 70,000 cars a day and a so-called interchange Strakonická-Barrandovský bridgewhere 194,000 cars pass daily. The busiest tunnel is the Zlíchovský tunnel.
In a year-on-year comparison, occupancy in cars has not changed since 2010. In the center, it is kept at 1.3 people per vehicle. For comparison, in 1990 it was 1.71, and in 2000 it was 1.44 persons per car.
