Today it is exactly 31 years since independent Ukraine became independent on the world map by separating from the block of post-Soviet republics.
After the collapse of the USSR, the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) was created, which Ukraine originally wanted to join, but it never happened because Kyiv never ratified the treaties. And this despite the fact that the CIS was created on the initiative of Russian, Belarusian and Ukrainian politicians.
For many years, Ukraine thus remained only a non-functional member of this organization, and after the annexation of Crimea, it definitively withdrew from the organization in 2018.
Independence celebrations
Today will also be a celebration of the anniversary of Ukraine’s independence in Prague. At 18:45, a human chain will be formed in Prague’s Old Town Square in support of independence and peace in Ukraine. The Junáka Scout Institute strives to create the longest possible chain of human bodies.
But the biggest celebrations of Ukrainian Independence Day are going to start at 5 p.m. at the Prague Exhibition Center in Holešovice. Prague Mayor Zdeněk Hřib will also visit the place in front of the Industrial Palace at 7 p.m.
Throughout the day, Ukrainian celebrations are concentrated on Wenceslas Square. It should be celebrated here until 10 p.m. in the evening. The organizers expect up to five thousand people on the spot, and at the same time they also want to commemorate the Sunday anniversary of the invasion of Czechoslovakia by the allied troops of the Warsaw Pact in August 1968.
It is also celebrated in front of the Russian embassy
The same course of celebration of the Independence Day of Ukraine is also prepared on Boris Nemtsov Square in Prague’s Bubencha in front of the Russian Embassy.
Independence celebrations are ordered this year in Ukraine itself in a much more intimate spirit. The country fears Russian attacks targeting celebrating groups. In some localities, such as Kharkiv, celebrations are therefore banned completely.
By coincidence, Ukraine’s independence day also coincides with the anniversary of Russia’s annexation. Today is exactly half a year since Russian soldiers attacked the sovereignty of Ukraine.
