Prague – weather: Persistent rain, is there a risk of flooding? The municipality is monitoring the situation
According to hydrometeorologists’ data from around 10:30 today, it is increased water level in Botič on the border with Prague, namely in Průhonice and Jesenice-Kocanda. The first level of flood activity is in effect there. On Saturday, August 20, Botič in Prague reached the second level of flood activity and water, for example, flooded the underpass at the station in Vršovice. In the metropolis, the CHMÚ now reports normal conditions on all streams.
“We are closely monitoring the situation, which could be related to the occurrence of floods, at all times. We also monitor the conditions of small streams in Prague and in front of Prague. The flood alert no longer applies to Prague, but the heavy rain warning is still in effect. But the CHMÚ assumes that even this phenomenon should stop today, so there is no need to worry at the moment,” said Hofman.
When there is a flood, it first sits the flood commission and then the crisis team. In case of faster floods, the crisis team will immediately convene. The chairman of the commission and the staff is the mayor, and its members include, among other things, other councillors, rescuers or representatives of the Capital City Services Administration or Prague Energetics (PRE). The commission meets during the first flood stage.
20 years since the flood
Since the devastating floods in 2002, the municipality has invested four billion crowns in the city’s flood protection. About 20 kilometers of barriers were built, gates closing the Čertovka, and a pumping station and anti-flood closures of the tributaries of this river were built at Rokytka in Libni. The city is also gradually revitalizing streams and rivers and returning streams that were straightened in the past to their original riverbeds. A flood 20 years ago caused about 27 billion in damage in Prague and 50,000 inhabitants had to be evacuated.
