Open Monument Day with sustainable monuments (Antwerp)
What do the Town Hall, the Steen, the House of Sant’Egidio and the De Roma concert hall have in common? They are all examples of sustainability and you can discover that on Sunday 11 September during Open Monument Day.
More than 35 Antwerp buildings open their doors during Open Monument Day. There are four thematic city walks and a bicycle tour in the city. All locations are free to visit. It is advisable to book in advance for activities, which is possible from 23 August.
The town hall and Harmony hall are examples of how sustainability and monuments go hand in hand, by focusing on energetic standards. Sustainability is widely adapted.
“In this way, sustainability also has a community-building impact: people come together in buildings such as Sant’Egidio House and De Roma”, says Antwerp Mayor Bart De Wever (N-VA). “It also has an influence on the appearance and the heritage experience, as can be seen at Godshuis Van der Biest.”
In the student quarter, interested parties can visit De Grote Robijn, the monastery of the Grauwzusters. The buildings of Bank Van Breda can be admired on Nieuw Zuid. They are outside the Ring. Flemish Tram and Autobus Museum, the Arena district of Braem, rectory Sint-Fredegandus and Royal Athenaeum Deurne can be visited.
There are guided walks in the City Park and the Brialmont Park. Via virtual reality, the visitor can discover 17th-century Lillo and that of the future. Petroleum South can then be explored again by bike and with a guide.
