Matrix and The Truman Show outdoors in Lyon
You have to swallow the pill: it’s already the end of summer. Don’t panic, there are still a few fine days before the start of the school year, and long evenings to enjoy the cinema with all the stars out. At the Parc de la Feyssine (Villeurbanne) or at Monplaisir (Lyon 8e), cult films are in the spotlight in the open air, and more of the kind that turn our heads upside down.
Cyberspace pirate or anonymous anonymous stuck in the wrong role of a parallel life, Keanu Reeves and Jim Carrey forever marked pop culture and the screens of the 1990s. Both plagued by inextricable existential questions, they survive, in 2022, beacons in our nights as much as cinema treats.
Pass through the mirrors
Almost 25 years after its release, The Truman Show by Peter Weir is still part of a fine observation of the society of the spectacle, more topical than ever, as if reality TV and vast audiovisual trompe-l’oeil had become the watchwords of our era bathed in all kinds of plots.
As for Matrixthe co-director – still director at the time of the release of the first film of the trilogy in 1999 – Lilly Wachowski delivered a new key to reading in August 2020 in an interview given to Netflix: “I’m happy that people are talking about the films Matrix as a trans story, and I’m grateful to be able to help them along their journey. People realized that was the original intention of the movie. The world was not quite ready for this. » Is it more today? We can hope so.
Our recommendation: do not deprive yourself of anything and rediscover these two films, screened free of charge – in their original version – under the stars and at your fingertips a few days apart. As if they had been thought of together, like two variations of the same crossing of the mirror.
