Formerly “Austria’s most beautiful station” slips further: only 8th place for Linz

Linz Central Station was voted Austria’s recognized train station eight times – the last time, however, in 2014. Things have gone downhill since then, and in the latest train station test by the Verkehrs Club Österreich (VCÖ), Linz only ranked 8th among the ten provincial capitals.
From the famous train station to the place of indisposition – unfortunately that is the main station in Linz in some corners: stranded homeless people, problems with garbage and faeces and unfortunately also crime cannot be denied.
Countermeasures have been introduced, but have only limited effect: In addition to investments in improved video surveillance and lighting, the police station inside Linz Central Station was relocated some time ago. The existing police station was also expanded.
Problem zones are the underground car park area and its entrances, the bus station (virtually all the benches there are occupied by sleeping homeless people at night) and the park in front of the station, where, especially in the warm season, dozens of people are drunk or under the influence of other drugs who often stops loudly.
Linz Central Station as a “place of fear”
The pedestrian passage to Kärntnerstraße and the large, completely overcrowded bicycle parking lot directly in front of the station hall are not very inviting either, the many dead bikes are striking here. In a LINZA survey on the “places of fear” in Linz, Linz Central Station was mentioned most often.
It is also noticeable at the train stations outside the provincial capitals that the Upper Austrian Train stations are hardly represented: Braunau (11th place) is the only train station in our state that is represented in the top 20.
Hbf Linz only in 8th place
Of the major train stations, Vienna Central Station received the best rating from passengers in this year’s VCÖ train station test for the sixth time and was also named most frequently when asked which train station passengers liked best. The accessibility by public transport, the accessibility and the overall condition of the Vienna Central Station were rated particularly well. “Silver” goes ex aequo to Salzburg’s main train station and St. Pölten’s main train station.
Linz: steady descent
Bringing up the rear is Bregenz main station again, followed by Meidling station and Linz main station, which slipped down another place compared to last year’s result (7th place). In 2020, Linz was still in 6th place.
I am VCÖ train station test: Vienna Central Station is rated the best of the major state capital train stations / Linz only 8th.
