Lagoons on the highway, flooded squares, fallen trees. Night storms at night busy firefighters | iRADIO
While it rained a little at most in Vysočina yesterday, elsewhere the sky was completely dark and stormy. Firefighters had more than 100 interventions across the country. They went out the most in the South Bohemian Region and also in Central Bohemia, mainly due to fallen trees and water pumping. One lagoon was waiting for them, for example, on the D1 highway near Prague.

In Prague, firemen intervened in more than 25 events connected with storms, and only until 11 p.m. In the night hours, the storms in the capital calmed down, so the units only went out for a few events.
“They had the most work in the eastern and southeastern parts of Prague. These were mainly lagoons on roads and water pumping from flooded areas. In two cases, they freed stranded vehicles from the lagoon,” Prague fire chief Martin Kavka told Radiožurnál. He added that they also had to remove fallen branches in several places.
A short distance from Průhonice, a lagoon about twenty centimeters deep was formed, which significantly slowed down traffic. Firefighters had to flush the drain there to get the water out. Water also caused similar problems on the D5 highway.
Flooded square
In Rokycansk, specifically in Hrádek, it rained the most. An extreme almost 130 liters per square meter fell there in three hours, most of it in a single hour.
Torrential rain also flooded the square in South Bohemia’s Milevsk. The water mixed with the mud there reached a height of about half a meter. It penetrated to the town hall and flooded several cars in the parking lot in front of it.

Thunderstorms will also appear on Saturday, mainly in the eastern half of the country and as late as around eight in the evening.
“Rain will be heavier in the east and northeast later this evening. During the day, especially in the eastern half of the territory of the Czech Republic, storms will occur in places, rare and strong,” explains Miloš Dvořák from the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute.
Storms are not only in the Czech Republic – for example in neighboring Germany, specifically in the south, this applies even today before storms. It has been raining very heavily in the foothills of the Alps for the past few hours.
But the situation is going from extreme to extreme – on many European rivers, including major rivers such as the Rhine and the Danube, due to the drought, on the other hand, the extremely low water level complicates shipping.
