but nobody wants to live there (for fear of living in housing occupied by offenders)
They had ended up in the wrong hands, rights inhabited for years by relatives of deceased persons or squatting by those who have never had the right. More than one investigation has also shown how, on more than one occasion, there was also a real clandestine market: who appropriated a apartment he then resold it to the family on duty who had never applied for public housing.
Rome, the neighbor dies, the house is enough for them: the couple even kept the old man’s clothes
THE NUMBERS
For two years apart from this, however, despite the numerous anomalies still to be remedied, the Ater, which takes care of part of the social housing complex, has started a large reacquisition operation. The numbers are these: from 2020, 650 apartments have been returned, with an average of one per day. On several functional and decisive occasions the participation of the Prefecture was also in those neighborhoods where the houses were illegally occupied by especially members or family members of clans and criminal associations. This is the case of San Basilio but also of Tor Bella Monaca where the Ater was able to recover the immobilization also thanks to the joint intervention of the police: police, carabinieri, municipal.
THE DISTRICTS
The neighborhoods that more than others have been affected by the eviction and reacquisition operations are in fact those on the outskirts. To Sanba and Torbella are added Ostia, Tiburtino III, Laurentino, Tor Sapienza, Pietralata, Val Melaina, Quarticciolo. And if on the one hand, the reassignment process is still difficult – we are 10% of the recovered assets – also due to the fear of many regulars having the right to enter homes once controlled by the malady, on the other hand it has been developed a system to block new occupations. Specifically, for each property recovered, Ater has activated particular alarms thanks to an allocation that has so far amounted to 2.5 million euros. All accommodations are protected with anti-intrusion and video surveillance systems. These apartment protection systems have also been integrated with internal sensors that detect temperature changes and trigger the alarm in the event that someone enters, alternating the conditions of the property.
«In just two years we have recovered 650 Ater apartments which for various reasons had been illegally occupied. It was an intolerable situation, in the face of all the people who had been waiting for a home for a long time. Today we have ordered and put back on the track of legality these accommodations that can be assigned to those who are entitled to it. The houses are located in areas with a high population density – comments the governor Nicola Zingaretti – places where the presence of the institutions is fundamental for social cohesion. Being present in these security areas of Rome means giving more and more possibilities for the future to those who live there and to the entire city. The commitment of the Region continues in this direction also thanks to the fundamental collaboration with Ater, the Prefecture, the Police and the Capitoline Administration ». The latter, as the Regional Councilor for Housing Policies Massimiliano Valeriani reminds us, “is committed to using this process and providing a valuable contribution”.
