A new public space from a dilapidated place. Dlabačov tram loop in Prague comes to life again | iRADIO
It used to be a busy place during falconry gatherings and spartakiades, then for many years it became just an empty space near the historic center. The tram roundabout in Prague in Dlabačov with the adjacent reinforced concrete footbridge is now coming back to life after some time – the city has opened a new bistro there as a place and has other plans. He is planning a cultural event right at the tram interchange.

The tracks overgrown with grass, black tables and chairs on the platforms and, as a bright dominant, the red-painted footbridge above the tracks and the steps to each boarding island. Until recently, the footbridge was not allowed and was threatened with demolition. Now it served as a link between the loop and the surroundings and also for sitting. The decommissioned tram T3 stands on the middle track of the loop, which serves as a background.
The tram turnstile was transformed into a place with a bistro
“There are special wooden seats and tables that you can take and arrange as you like. It was taken into account that there are specific spaces and they have specific parameters that we want to respect. That the place allows a certain flexibility for people who live in the vicinity or will move here,” describes the author of the transformation of Točna Dlabačov Ondřej Kužílek.
The municipal organization Kreativní Praha is also looking for abandoned places in Prague that could serve people after transformation. She also helped make the tram turnpike accessible and transform it. According to Kristýna Kočová from Kreativní Prahy, it doesn’t even have to be expensive: “It’s not always necessary to wait 10, 15 years for the big, financially demanding construction changes.”
Only the portable furniture of the capital can help with the changes. “I think that temporality is such a concept for students from the nearby Strahov College. This will be – the five years they study at the university – actually how they remember it,” Kočová explains to Radiožurnál.
In the second half of the twentieth century, at the time of the Sokol gatherings and later the Spartakiads, crowds of trams passed through the tram loop, one train after another. Not far from Dlabačov is the Velký Strahov Stadium, where the crowds of people from the tram were heading. That is also why the roundabout was called a tram station. However, such a magnificent transport structure later lost its meaning in permanent operation. Not far from Dlabačov there is a similar large loop Královka.
“For regular operation, those loops were used occasionally when some lines were terminated due to repairs or reconstruction of tram lines,” added Daniel Šabík from the Prague transport company. Trams are running again at the Dlabačov turnpike – the special tourist line 42 turns there.
