Slovak under-20 hockey representatives will play the main stage of the next junior world championship in Moncton, Canada. In basic groups B, their opponents will be USA, Finland, Switzerland and Latvia.
In the A-group, which will be held in Halifax, there will be, for example, Canada, Sweden, the Czech Republic, Germany and Austria. The composition of the groups was announced by the Canadian Ice Hockey Federation together with the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF). The tournament will take place between December 26 and January 5, 2023.
Since no team was eliminated at the summer playoff championship in Edmonton, the composition of the groups was determined by the organizers thanks to a ranking compiled based on the positions of ten participants during the past five WCs. Latvia, which replaced Russia, remains in the elite group of junior champions. Three months ago, the IIHF excluded the confederation because of the war in Ukraine.
The organizers further inform that at least ten preliminary matches will be played in the community areas of the provinces of Nova Scotia (Halifax) and New Brunswick (Moncton) before the start of the tournament. The Slovak junior national team should fly to Canada around mid-December. The complete schedule will be known in the following matches, the website hockeyslovakia.sk reported.
