Why does Slovakia not recognize Kosovo? | REFRESHER.sk
The last time Kosovo-Serbia tensions came to our attention was in late July, when ethnic Serbs blocked border crossings and there was even talk of de-Nazification coming from the Serbian parliament.
The Kosovo Parliament approved a unilateral declaration officially declaring Kosovo an independent republic on February 17, 2008. Today, almost fifteen years later, Kosovo is still recognized by only 97 of the 193 UN countries.
Between 2017 and 2019, fifteen UN countries withdrew their support for Kosovo’s independence. On the contrary, it joined the geopolitically significant country supporting its independence in 2021 Israel.
He thus took the side of the USA, Japan, Canada and 22 countries from the European twenty-seven countries. Apart from Serbia, Kosovo is still not recognized by Russia, India, China and, of course, Slovakia. But why does the position of the Slovak countries of the European Union still differ?
Slovak position
Since the unilateral declaration of independence of Kosovo in 2008, the official position of the Slovak Republic has fundamentally changed. Furthermore, we belong to the five countries of the European Union that do not recognize its autonomy.
