In French-speaking Switzerland, the number of abandoned animals is increasing
After a two-year break, the number of abandoned animals is increasing, according to animal welfare organizations in western Switzerland, reports RTS.
Animal adoptions increased during the Covid-19 pandemic. But as people return to normal life, the number of abandoned animals has risen and shelter numbers are increasing again, especially in the summer.
During Covid, pet owners traveled less and were able to leave their animals at home. In Vaud, the number of abandoned animals in July 2022 was two to three times higher than in July 2020. Other cantons are reporting similar increases. Rodents, dogs and cats are the most commonly affected animals. Many of the animals were treated well before being handed over to the shelter.
In Switzerland it is illegal to release and leave a pet in the wild. The maximum penalties can be up to three years in prison. If an owner determines that keeping a pet is impossible, they must contact an animal shelter, sign over the ownership and explain any health or behavioral issues the pet may have.
