World Champs Jumping: Team gold title for Sweden
Sweden’s Olympic champions lived up to expectations as they vaulted to team gold at the 2022 ECCO FEI World Championships in Herning, Denmark, on Friday night, with the Netherlands winning silver and Great Britain rocketing up the leaderboard to claim bronze.
Henrik von Eckermann (King Edward), Malin Baryard-Johnsson (H&M Indiana) and Peder Fredricson (H&M All In) were in Tokyo’s winning three-member side, but it was the supreme finish produced by Peder’s older brother, Jens Fredricson ( the ground). Cosmopolit) who sealed it for the new masters.
Peder Fredricson was third in the individual ranking when he entered the competition, but with three fences down has ended up among the top 25 who entered Sunday’s individual medal decider. But his brother Jens has moved up to second behind teammate Henrik von Eckermann in pole position, so there may be more Swedish glory in the future.
The top three teams earned one of the five Olympic qualifying spots, and will be joined at the 2024 Paris Olympics by the fourth-placed Irish team and Germany, who were fifth.
Ireland’s team of Denis Lynch, Bertram Allen, Cian O’Connor and Daniel Coyle climbed from ninth place overnight to miss out on the bronze medal by just one penalty. Ireland has three riders qualified for Sunday’s WC individual finalwith Lynch at 19th, O’Connor at 20th and Allen at 21st.
After the first two rounds held on Wednesday and Thursday, only the top 10 teams from the 22 that started the week advanced to the floodlit final.
