why the elimination of Monaco is the business of OM and PSG
Just under a month from the start of the Champions League group stage, Paris Saint-Germain and Olympique de Marseille know more about the amounts they will receive for their participation in the competition. Thanks to the elimination of AS Monaco, the two clubs will collect several million more from the manna of television rights.
In addition to a sporting disappointment, elimination against PSV Eindhoven on Tuesday in the third qualifying round of the Champions League is a financial failure for AS Monaco. Fortunately for him, the Principality club can count on owners with broad enough shoulders so that the reversal in the Europa League is not detrimental to the future and the ambitions of Philippe Clément’s team.
On the other hand, by not participating in the group stage of the Champions League, which will begin on September 6, AS Monaco will have to sit on seven million euros… which will be shared by Paris Saint -Germain and Olympique de Marseille. The two clubs, qualified directly for the C1, will benefit from the elimination of the ASM and the “market pool” of UEFA concerning the television rights of the competition.
This “market pool” is approximately 300 million euros and the French share is estimated at 70 million euros, according to information from L’Equipe. The first half of this 70 million euros is divided between the clubs participating in the group stage, with 55% of the 35 million euros for the defending champions – PSG – and 45% for the second in the table – l ‘OM-.
Already more than 30 million euros insured
Paris and Marseille will therefore receive respectively 19.25 million euros and 15.75 million euros in television rights, it will be necessary to add the 15.64 million euros paid to all the clubs participating in the group stage of the C1. If AS Monaco had managed to pass the third qualifying round and then the play-offs, the story would have been different for PSG and OM.
The ASM would indeed have received 20% of the 35 million, or 7 million euros. Who therefore returns to the pockets of Paris and Marseille. The other 35 million euros from the French market will be distributed at the end of the season according to the number of games played by PSG and OM in the competition. In other words, the further a team goes, the more money it will earn. Once again, the absence of Monaco is the business of the two clubs, which will benefit from larger pieces of the cake.
