Children from Paredes can ‘pedal’ the Volta a Portugal by Bike
The Portuguese Cycling Federation (FPC) wants to encourage the youngest to ride a bicycle and, for that, it carried out the idea ‘Pedala na Volta’ which, on August 14th, will take place in Paredes, and which aims to promote the national project ‘Cycling at School .
On the same day that the ninth stage of the Volta a Portugal starts from this city, children and young people can “learn to pedal”, while having fun, “in the context of the Volta a Portugal”, emphasizes FDC, on its page.
At the end, a children’s bicycle will be drawn among all the participants who must be between the ages of three and 12 years old.
It should be noted that ‘Ciclismo Vai à Escola’ is a segment of the Cycling for Allthrough which the FPC looks for the number of cyclists in Portugal, for leisure and competition, while promoting the use of the bicycle as a day-to-day vehicle.
According to estimates by this body, “half of Portuguese elementary school students do not know how to ride a bicycle”. Now, to counter this scenario, the federation intends to “develop this motor skill generation in children’s context” by promoting, since the 2014/2015 school year, the Cycling Go to School initiative.
This idea has already reached 150 schools across the country, and this project aims to be the most comprehensive so that the practice of this sport is a reality, while encouraging a “sustainable means of transport”, also promoting the “fighting against obesity and a sedentary lifestyle”.
It is free and can be done on site, where the federation’s technicians will provide all the support for learning the basic cycling techniques.
