On 10 August Florence, of which St. Lawrence is co-patron, duly celebrates the anniversary: tradition has it that in the morning the historical procession of the Florentine Republic takes place in the street, which crosses the streets of the center for the offering of votive candles. At 10.45 am, in the basilica of San Lorenzo, the offering of candles by the mayor and then the Mass presided over by Cardinal Giuseppe Betori.
Also in anticipation of this event, the board of directors of the Opera medicea Laurenziana and the parish of San Lorenzo have always been attentive to the maintenance and improvement of the conditions of the basilica and the homonymous complex, regularly checking, several times in a year, the state of the external walls and the rest of the monuments, also to try to limit, as far as possible, the risks of collapses and accidents.
“The Laurentian Medici Opera – it is specified in a note – intervenes in this period, taking into account the crowding of tourists and passers-by under the main and side façades, given that the churchyard and the staircase have become places of bivouac and sitting of groups of people who contain the scum of the area, abandoning bottles, litter and food residues. Periodic security checks are then carried out, aimed above all at protecting the monument, but also at providing suitable protection for visitors and passers-by and documentation, in the event of an unfortunate accident ».
The Work, it continues, “has relied on proven experts, who identify and also the type of material of the artefacts and who, after precise checks, know how to suggest not only further urgent interventions to be taken in the event of a finding. danger, but also a subsequent program of restoration of the artefact, necessary for its conservation ».
