The match of the third preliminary round of the Conference League took place in Prague’s Eden on Thursday evening between the home Slavia Prague and the Greek Panathinaikos Athens.
As part of this risky football match, the Prague police prepared adequate security measures.
Not only police officers from the Prague Special Order Unit and the Regional Order Unit were involved, but also police officers from the Service Hippology Department, Service Cynology Department, criminal investigators, anti-conflict team, traffic police officers from the Traffic Inspectorate and Traffic Management Department, or police officers from the Prague IV Police Department . . and Prague I., including local departments.
Throughout the day, the police kept an eye on the fans of the Greek club, who had gathered in the Old Town Square, where they were drinking. After 4 p.m., roughly 300 Greek fans marched together at the stadium in Eden.
From Staroměstské náměstí, they set off to Staroměstská metro station, from where they took a specially prepared metro set to Želivského station. From there they continued their march to Vršovice. During the whole time, police officers from the Special Order Unit supervised their movement, two vehicles with LRAD sound equipment were also deployed, through which the police officers shared information and challenges with the fans.
On the route from the Želivského metro station to Vršovice, the fans were also accompanied by policemen on horses. Criminalists, including criminologists from the Department of Extremism and Terrorism, who specialize in spectator violence, i.e., for example, football fans, cannot be left out.
The transfer went smoothly. The traffic was corrected and diverted by the traffic police and dispatchers of the transport company. In the course of the measure, the police arrested one fan on suspicion of an offense involving the use of fireworks.
